As the post implies, my new set of elk calls from elk101.com arrived today. I will be rifle hunting this October but I figured learning this would help pass some of the 3 months and 29 days I have until I head west. Never having been a turkey hunter or having diaphragm call experience, this is going to be interesting. With a lil youtube coaching from Corey Jacobsen, ive already progressed from a dying hyena to an elk with laringiits. Much more practice to follow lol.

I wouldn't worry about a bugle in October. While there will still be some mating going on most bulls are finished with the cows and you will have a hard time getting them to come into one.

Now a cow call will work just to cover up some of the noises that us hunters make as we walk through the woods.

I was assuming that. I do want to try archery next year though if things pan out. Good to know about the cow call as I seem to have some soft mewing down fairly decently, so I should be able to use those proficiently by then.

I will have to admit that just about all the elk that I have killed either with rifle, pistol, or a bow and arrow had no idea that I was even in the area. I didn't use a single call. I do enjoy going out in September and seeing what kind of bulls I can call in with a bugle, and I have seen a spike elk come running like a freight train out of control from over a quarter of a mile away when we used a cow call in September. We didn't shoot him but it was funny watching him try and find a way up into the ledges that we were sitting in.
