Myself and a friend are headed to Idaho this fall for a deer/elk hunt. After a successful antelope/deer hunt to Wyoming last year we decided to try our luck in Idaho. Idaho has an awesome reduced tag price for veterans and we both qualify, so that is going to cut our costs down drastically. I am looking at the middle fork or Selway zones because of hunt dates and seasons lining up. I know it's difficult access in many areas but I was wondering if anyone could tell me the best method. Pack in on foot, find a packer, or take a flight into the wilderness. We do have a hunt trailer we built to stay in so if there are areas we can park and camp along the road to hunt that would be optimal but we're really just looking for an awesome experience. I am not looking for honey holes just a good general area to start. I am still just trying to understand how Idaho's tag system works. So any info or links to other threads would be great.

Thanks

I'm moving to Idaho this summer and have been doing the deep dive into research. The tag system is a bit confusing but is simple at the same time. I by no means am an expert and may well have it wrong but as I understand it....

For elk you have to pick a "zone" and then pick an A or B tag. The A and B tags do not mean the same thing in each zone and an A or B for a particular zone cannot be used somewhere else. So for elk you are limited to one zone and one tag type (unless you buy a second tag if any are left when they go on sale for NR). The general deer tags though can be used in multiple units that have open general seasons open it looks like.

From my research the selway is quite remote and you are best off hiking in and camping. Truck hunting and hiking it everyday seemed to be a suboptimal plan. It sounds like it is huge country and low densities and knocking one down is when the chore of getting it out can be a race against time in the terrain if it is warm.

Thanks John, we decided to fly in. Made arrangements through McCall aviation. We're still not 100% sure but were thinking Chamberlain basin, big creek, or lower loon. Talking to the pilots all 3 are decent areas. We'll do a little more research and hopefully narrow it down.
