Hey guys,
I'm fairly new to posting and definitely a rookie elk hunter (I'm a Minnesota deer hunter).
My dad and I are going to try and hunt elk somewhere in northern CO for otc 2nd rifle. Neither 1 of us have shot an elk before and with his age and my upcoming life changes this will probably be our only chance elk hunting together. I was wondering if anyone had some good advice to point us in a good direction. I was researching the 4/441 units online along with 12 so far but it sounds like they are pretty crowded. We don't have horses or wheelers that we will be bringing so everything will be on foot from our camp. I'm open to other unit advice, but any info helps.

Thanks

For a first time elk hunter that doesn't know the area and doesn't have any time to get out and scout out the area I would say just pick a unit that has lots of National Forest or BLM and go hunting. Get up high where you can do a lot of glassing first thing in the morning and late afternoon would be the best suggestion for you.

Don't worry about all the other hunters, it will be like that in all the OTC units in the state. Second season is the most popular season for the elk hunters of the US that come to Colorado to hunt.

Be willing to work harder than most others. That doesn't always mean packing in 5 miles either. Find areas that other hunters don't want to hunt because they think it's too steep or the blow downs are too thick and nasty.
There is usually a steep learning curve for new elk hunters and flatlanders come into the game with that disadvantage. You can't be in too good of shape for elk hunting in the mountains.
Good luck to you and your dad.

Will be in GMU 12 for 1st rifle season so if you want PM me and I will share what I learn. Have hunted that unit before but am from out of town so don't have much first hand knowledge but will hopefully be successful and don't have a problem helping out.
