Leaving next week Tuesday for my black hills rifle hunt. First time elk hunting and i'm seeing the high temps in the 60's yet. Is this a concern? I know I'd like it a little cooler but don't know how it'll affect the elk.
I have no knowledge of the Black Hills, but I do of the Sierras and Rockies. I've been in a freezing cold hail storm in the Rockies in August and have seen snow in the Sierras in summer. My suggestion would be to bring warm, waterproof clothes and light, hot weather clothes.
BTW, we've fished beneath glaciers in the Eastern Sierra in the summer. I have a few pics of them if you'd like to see 'em.
Just got back from NW Wyoming and the temps were in the mid-60's. The bulls were clammed up and not talking. If we got lucky, they would answer us once then sneak in. We were 2 for 3 but it was tough hunting. They wanted to fire up but I think it was too warm.
Checking weather a little closer now, morning temps in the 30's afternoon in the high 40's to mid 50's. Chance of precip 3 of 5 days. Actually looking a little promising now. The black hills don't usually set in and rain all day but can rain quite a bit in a short time. Small chance of snow too.
Will only get a few hours of scouting before the season so I'm hoping the elk will talk a bit!
Just got back from the hunt. Scouted the night before and saw 4 cows. Next am back in same spot and nothing. Same story different verse the next 3 days. Saw elk sign, just couldn't get on them. Tail end of rut, wind blowing 20-40 every day, long story short I got skunked. Temps in the 20's-40's in the am. Highs in the 40's-60's during the day. Had a great time elk or not!!
