Elk in 54/55?

I am going to do an archery hunt in 54 or 55 (at least that's my plan as of now) this fall and I was wondering if it is worth trying to get a NR elk tag. It is a lot of money for a long shot. Consider that I will spend most of my time high for deer.

Also if anyone has advise for deer I could use some as 55 is a good sized unit and I would love to bounce some questions off someone that knows it.

I was in 54 last year on an archery deer hunt, and saw more elk than deer.

Personally, I would focus on one specie when bowhunting......especially in those units. There's a lot of elk there, but they tend to be in the timber and not where the mule deer summer.

The fossil ridge wilderness is a good area. I would definitely pick up an elk tag. There will be plenty of elk as high as the deer during archery.

I hunted 55 second season as I usually do and I think it needs a few more years to become the unit it can be. Elk and deer do overlap as I was 9500 to 12000 ft.

I would say that 55 won the most snow out of any unit in the state again this year. If it were me I would look to the NW units where winter was mild or the units further sw in the gunnison basin. Op said he changed his mind about 55 after talking to the biologist and I think he is on the right track to a good hunt now.
