This is my first post. I am wanting to do an elk hunt in New Mexico or Arizona. I am not familiar with anything about these hunts. Most of my hunting has either been whitetails or birds. A friend has told me private land hunts are the best and an outfitter is a must. I would like to do a pack in hunt and want the opportunity of a trophy class animal. I have applied for unit 10 in Arizona but the success rate is only 1.6%. Hard hunts with the opportunity of a trophy is an option. I would also be open to other states. Just want a first class hunt!

Questions:
Can I get a private pack in hunt in this unit or one comparable?
Cost?
Recommendations on a good outfitter?
Is a combo mule deer elk hunt an option?
Recommendations on hunting units?

Any advice is welcomed and thanks in advance for your help!

AZ- u must draw the tag first. Then u could hire an outfitter. NM- u could draw a tag or buy a LO tag. Not many places in AZ that would require a pack in. Very accessible for the most part by vehicle, atv. Unit 10 in AZ is mainly made up of the BO ranch. U can buy a permit for the ranch I think and hunt. There was some conversation about them closing access last yr but I'm not sure on exact details. I don't think they did. It's checkerboard private/public. Many years before u draw that tag probably. U can apply in NM with outfitter pool and have better draw odds if your going to use a guide anyway. The Gila units are widely considered the trophy units there. Some of those have wilderness areas that you could pack in with horses, etc. But I think if you are really wanting a backcountry hunt these states don't have vast wilderness that requires a big pack in compared to other states. I would stay clear of trying to do a mule deer/ elk combo especially if it's your first trip
