I have scouting for my son and found plenty of sign and even saw some cow elk and a few small bulls. We were in area 11 (wyoming) at the North End around Arlington. (Thank you to all who have given me some insight as where to go and look). They are a couple of miles off the road in some parks and drainage ditches. The elevation is right at 9,000 feet.

Being new to elk hunting, my question is, will they stay around the same area the remainder of the year?

As long as there is good cover, water, and good food they should stay in the general area thru most of your season. If we get an early snow it will push the cows lower but probably not the bulls. And a lot of pressure will blow them out for sure. This year here in the Snowy's water will be the key. Is your son planning on archery or just rifle?

He is just going to rifle hunt. I am hoping we can get in there and catch them in transition. There is a lot of ground there.

How early in October? I hunt elk at 9,000 feet all the way through the middle of November in Colorado. Weather will dictate the elk whereabouts. If there isn't much snow they will still be hanging at that elevation. I would call the G and F and find out where they move if a good amount of snow falls.

He can hunt that area all the way from oct 1 to oct 31. If a big snow hits I believe they hit the ranches and hay fields around elk mountain. From what I hear you have better luck finding and elk that will walk up into your camp and lay down than you will in getting permission to hunt down there. I have a call into game fish to see if they have a list of "hunter friendly" ranches.
