My buddy and I are heading to Eastern Montana with general Big Game combo tags on our first DIY trip. Primarily chasing Mule Deer but wondering if anyone had any info if we had a possibility of seeing or shooting any Elk? It would be nice to pick a general area we could target both. Open for suggestions

In the SE area it will be very tough to find a general elk tag area that offers public land elk. For your first trip I recommend focusing on deer and if you tag out traveling west to looks for an elk and consider it a learning experience for future hunts. We hunted SE last year for deer and this year I ended up with the big game combo as well. I Have done a lot of research into areas with general elk and deer seasons and there is very little opportunity in the east. This does depend though on when/how many times you are going.

the elk herds in region 7 are very mobile and with the high amount of private land here they don't very often stay long on the BMAs and public land. some of the block management areas will have a sighting and maybe see some tracks but don't count on finding one without a lot of luck or access to some of the large ranches where the herds hang out.
