Are you staying close to 84 or looking to get away a bit?

Have to stay close to 84 unfortunately, if we were going to spend the night id try and venture somewhere. but straight shot there and then back to south east Idaho. how's that pass? I hear its been pretty nasty? never been that way before.

I don't think it's too bad right at the moment. It has been a bad year until now though! I can't think of any place with good eats for you, but usually we're headed on a hunt or a kids ball game when we go through, so usually in a hurry!

The smokehouse in Lagrande has pretty good breakfast and lunch. Just east of Safeway on 30 or adams street I think? Some family just came over cabbage hill this last weekend and all was well but that can change with any new weather system coming through. Good thing is the road department works hard on that section of highway all winter long so should be in good shape. There are alternatives around just longer time frames. So shouldn't get stuck .

Just off I84 between Baker City and North Powder, Haines Steak House. New York Ritchies in Island City, adjoins LaGrande, does a nice job, about 2mi off the fwy. If you want a good burger, Boardman is a bit west of Hermiston, C&D Drive-In, soft ice-cream too and good seasoned curly fries.

As far as the road, I'd check the bad spots here. https://tripcheck.com/Pages/RCMap.asp It's been good of late, but we have a weather change due mid week. I84 gets shut down in that area with weather enough that checking is a good idea.

Here are the 3 spots to check/watch out for in OR, but they cover about 75% of your OR trip. There are some sweeping curves with moderate hills, Ontario to Baker City, if it's slick, be careful. Then Ladd Canyon between North Powder and LaGrande, a short but potentially nasty pass, can be real bad, especially windy for some reason. I have seen it shut down for wind as well as ice/snow. Then LaGrande to Pendelton is potentially the longest/worst stretch, which includes Cabbage Hill just outside Pendelton.

I second Tim McCoy on the C&D drive in. You would have to go a little past Hermiston to get to Boardman but the Bozo Burger is awesome! Here in Ontario we have a real good taco place downtown called Tacos Mi Ranchito. They have awesome tacos. My favorite are the shrimp or pork.

The Plaza Inn in Ontario makes a really good breakfast. I second the Haines Steakhouse also.

Giant pile of blueberry pancakes with 3 eggs over medium on top does a body good!! Alway hit that and "Nell's". Great little burger joint also on Adams Ave. More of a tradition than anything else. My dad was eating at Nells when he was a kid in the 50's.

I'm hungry now! thanks for the reply's! unfortunately it was such a fast loooooong trip we didn't have time to stop anywhere. so I grabbed a 2 cheeseburger meal from the McDonalds gas station. was trying to stay ahead of weather and thank goodness we did. dumped snow on us on way back and woke up at my house with a few inches and expecting 12!!!! tired of the snow.
