Anyone hunted the early high elevation rifle season in colorado? there are several units that offer this hunt. It takes some points to draw and is right in the middle of the archery elk season but I would think a guy could shoot a monster up high in sept. with a rifle. I'm thinking of putting in for it next year.

Those are the greatest rifle mule deer hunts available, IMO. Excellent trophy quality, high adventure factor, low hunter pressure, and the deer are visible above treeline. Simply a great hunt.

Haven't hunted one before, but I have a above treeline early season buck tag in Zone 86 this year. It took me 7 points to draw. Sangre de Cristo mountains are some pretty narly mountains, but there are some really nice bucks in there.

Me and a friend hunted that season in 2006 and got caught in some bad weather and never seen a single buck. We were hunting up north of Ft.Collins early Sept and we were told the weather pry pushed then into the dark timber.Lots of lighting and rain.

In '06, I backpacked in unit 47 to the headwaters of the Frying Pan River, 11,000 ft. I was there for a week and never saw another hunter....of course I also never saw a deer either (althought I did hear bugling elk at the river). Glassed all over. Bushwacked up several drainages and found their empty beds. Some nice trout in the river, should have brought my pole. It was a great experience anyway and I have been buyng points each year to go back.
