Hello all, I am new to this forum, and looking to pick some of your brains a bit. I am starting to plan a 2016 Moose or most likely Caribou hunt in Alaska. I would like to go for Moose more but I feel that a first time DIY trip to the interior, id have better odds with Caribou. There will be 3-4 of us going and driving up from Arizona with a cargo trailer. We are looking to do EVERYTHING ourselves. I am looking for ANY info or things I need to look into that I may not have thought of yet. If we go for Caribou, I think we are set on trying for Mountain Caribou. Thank you very much in advance for the replies! Hope you all have a good hunting season.

I would focus on one or the other. I would go for caribou since it has a much higher chance of success and if the seasons happen to overlap where you are hunting then pick up a moose tag just in case. There are no Mountain Caribou in Alaska. There are barren ground caribou that you can hunt in the mountains if that is what you meant. When you say you want to do everything yourselves does that mean you are not willing to do a fly out? In my experience hunting Alaska you will have a much more enjoyable and successful hunt if you are willing to fly out. Just my 2 cents.

yes, we are definitely going for one or the other, more than likely caribou for the same reason you said. Im willing to fly out but we were planning on bringing a "side by side" and a quad, if needed. I guess that is the biggest thing we need to figure out is where to go and what is accessible by some kind of vehicle or if we need to go in by plane. We definitely want to get "off the road" and back in there a ways, but we are trying to somewhat keep the cost down, so we were leaning more towards trying not to fly out.

Fly out
Go for bou
You go to AK for the wilderness experience.
I don't think limiting yourself to the road system, is going
to give you the best chances of that .
Hunting Alaska cost money. But in my opinion, a good air taxi is
not the place to look at lowering your cost. All the money you save on scimping
Will mean nothing if you have a crappy trip on the haul road.

If I was going to go to AK I would look into the area north of Nome AK for moose....

I worked up there in 2006 and that tundra area hold some of the biggest bull moose ive ever seen in the wild. Not many trees up there...get flown into one of the report air strips get a good spotting scope and get on a rise and start glassing...

I'm not even kidding I seen a group of bulls up there in late July bulls up there and there were all 60+" wide...

Flew right over them with the helicopter so I got a good look at them..

Lots of Brown bears too FYI...

Guys on another forum (starts with Rok) had less than awesome things to say about that operation recently. Just an FYI but you might check out their review.

I assume you are flying out of Happy Valley then? If its not too late I would go with 70 North then. Arrowhead does not have a great reputation!!! When I was stationed up there I had a friend fly out of Happy Valley with him for a sheep hunt and he said he would literally quit hunting before he would deal with that guy again. Hunting caribou with a bow up there is awesome and extremely frustrating at the same time!

70 north by far the better choice. Too many complaints about arrowhead. Also depending on the time of year( which is pretty much year round up there) be prepared for tent days or delayed flights due to weather.

Not sure if you said when you were going? I've spent quite a bit of time hunting moose and caribou and you might want to be cautious of the the time of year. If you hunt late when the moose season is going on the caribou will be in or start to be in migration mode. Early in the season they will give you a better chance at spot and stalk hunting. Key with a bow!
