Hi guys I'm looking for a little bit of feedback regarding deer & elk districts 300/302 and 329/331/332. I am extremely familiar with the areas in the Dillon area that are on the "left side" of of the highway inbetween Dillon and Lima, MT (sage creek, blacktail, & sweetwater). Our group this year is taking a week to hunt down there and so were looking to expand our horizons into the "right side" of the interstate and learn some new country. So this year the husband and I put in for mule deer district 302 which was a guaranteed draw. So right now I'm trying to decide if its worth the effort and time to put in for the 302 cow tag since we have drawn deer tags. In the areas we hunt the general elk tag is open for either sex but I'd rather not shoot a cow with my general tag. So here are my questions.

Should I put in for the a cow tag for 302 which has fairly good odds or another district in the big hole such as the 329/331/332 combo that isn't so good??? I usually put in for region 2 but since they added that new rule, I really don't want to put in for my regular district if I can't shoot a bull.
my personal goal for deer this year is to get a decent buck that scores in the 120s or better. so I'm looking for some tips from anyone whose familiar with the area on good places to start. I am more than happy to share some info. for the places I'm familiar with as well.

We plan on making 3-5 scouting trips this summer so we will spend most of that time exploring the new areas, especially in 302 while trying to hunt some archery antelope in mid August.

Thanks again I really appreciate it!

Miss Jordan,

As I have not hunted Montana (YET), I like your train of thought on this and wish you much luck. I agree that it may be a good year to search out a new area, especially with the new rule change in your district. I'll be following this thread for future advice. Good luck and keep us posted.

Thanks Bonecollector I'm excited for the upcoming season. Plus I absolutely love the country in SW montana. We have a blast every season we get to head down there! [emoji4]

Jordan, I used to hunt the west side of the freeway near Dillon. If you are interested, pm me. About all I could give you would be some access points where we used to find game, been 10 years or so since I hunted that area.

I know the wind can be horrible sometimes so you better have a comfortable vehicle or your in for a cold ride! I'm interested in the side Clark canyon is on, so right side of I-15 if your headed south
