Being as there are many members here who enjoy going out and losing themselves in nature (in a good way, not literally lost, however this would work for that too) I figured I'd share my experiences with this product. I, myself, enjoy going out and being out where your cell phones don't work, and no one else can bother you. However, with no cellphone service and being gone for a week+, I do get nervous that the wife cannot relay messages back to me....I.E...emergencies etc.. So for peace of mind I order the Delorme Inreach SE. This is a 2-way satellite messenger + SOS device. I was weary at first, I read some bad reviews about software and customer service, but I took the plunge anyway because the pro's outweighed the cons. I tested it at my in-laws house, sending messages to folks, receiving them. it all worked quite nicely. With every message you send, a link with GPS coordinates it sent as well. You can also hand out a password so if you're device is dropping bread crumbs, they can follow that as well. The real test were the hunting situations. as long as you aren't sitting directly under a thick tree, these messages come/go very quickly (3-5 minutes for send/reply via satellite). The device is paired with your phone via Bluetooth so you can keep your device in the open and operate from your phone, this capability works very well from my experience. when paired with your phone it uploads your contact list and works just like any other texting app/service. It works off the iridium satellite network so sat coverage is almost always there. The SOS feature has a safety switch to prevent inadvertent actuation of the SOS. Once activated, GEOS rescue centers are immediately notified and will begin conversation with the device. SITREP's can be relayed to the rescue center which can help expedite a pickup. The device retails for about $300.00, annual subscription of 25.00, plus whatever monthly plan you'd like. With the explorer subscription, you pay $25 bucks, and can suspend the device whenever you want, you only pay for the months you use it. Sure the price tag is a big spendy, however, for a little peace of mind, both at home for my loved ones and for me in case something bad happens; I think it's absolutely worth it.
