If you have an older CVA and have tried to shoot Blackhorn 209 you have likely experienced issues. Blackhorn simply does not ignite reliably in factory CVA breech plugs. It's gotten so bad that they started selling breech plugs specifcally made for Blackhorn 209 powder but only for the V2 Accuras.

So for those of us with an older CVA including the v1 accura we were stuck using the other powders or dealt with ignition issues. I have been trying to find a solution to this problem for quite some time and found that others were modifying their breech plugs for the blackhorn 209 powder. I spoke to Carl here in Laramie and he suggested doing this myself as he did not have time. I did some research and found this thread from a gunsmith in Rapid who has done this many times. If you do a search for ronlaughlin CVA breech plug modification you will find it. I would post it but it might just get deleted by mods.

I copied his simple instructions and it worked out great. Required a 5/32 drill bit, 3/8 82 degree spotting drill, 10/32 tap, and a vent. Took less than 10 minutes. 5/32 all the way through. 3/8 to a depth of 3/8, Tap 8 threads.

Went out and shot last week and it worked perfectly. And I can attest that 120 grains of BH209 kicks like a mule! I usually shoot 90-100 and decided to see what would happen with 120. Wow!

Havent had my but kicked like that since shooting hot 3.5 inch 12 gauge loads at cranes.

Years ago when I first got my .54 caliber side lock I tried 120 grains with a 430 grain bullet. Talk about a shoulder buster.

Surprising how much punch is in a 50 cal 300 gr bullet with 100 gr of BH209. Still not as much as full house loads from my 416 Rigby, but enough that they certainly get your attention.
