Corrosive Accubond Tips

I started going through some of my reloads to see if I had enough for this hunting season and found these 30 cal. Accubonds with some of the tips gone or partly gone. These were reloads from 2015 and were stored in the house at room temperature. I sure did not expect to see this corrosion going on. Any of you guys had anything similar happen with your Accubond reloads?

If those rounds came out of a Styrofoam shell box like i see in the background that could be your problem. The tips may be reacting to the foam or the other way around. Iv'e got AB reloads a lot older than that with no problems but are in hard boxes.

I'd say that those boxes or at least the styrofoam were exposed to water at some point. Perhaps the shells were wet when you put them away into the boxes.

The styrofoam will seal up the tips and then the water reacted to the lead.

The shells did come out that styrofoam box but the box has not ever left the house. Can't figure out how any water could have gotten in. The poly tip has just dissolved. Guess that some how water got under the tip? This is the first time anything like this has happened and other than this, I've had good luck with Accubonds.

May not be water related. If the plastic tips and the Styrofoam somehow reacted, it could have produced a corrosive chemical possibly. Those photos look pretty bad. I've been using Accubonds for a few years now and have not seen anything like that.

Ive had the same issue recently, I bought a box to reload and when I opened them I found the jackests were badly stained and the tips on many were disolved . Nosler made it good. I did notice that the desecant pack was missing ....IMG_20180807_123217154.jpg

Some plastics will react to others. Something fishermen know quite well. Ergo plastic worm proof plastic boxes are made. Odds are that effect was a big part of the issue, the two materials caused a reaction.

Looks like the same thing going on. I wish I had caught them when I reloaded the shells. At the time, the bullets looked as nice as usual. Going further through my reloads, I found some loaded 300 mag 200 gr. partitions in hard plastic boxes and of course they are fine. I just checked through my 200 gr. Accubond bullets and they all look okay. Wonder if it was just a bad lot...or as Tim said, maybe a reaction with the styrofoam?

I don't shoot that much so I sometimes go several years before reloading. I'll be using hard plastic boxes next time.

I'm going to take some of the Accubonds I have for reloading and just stick them into some Styrofoam and see what happens. I'll get a couple wet and see if it makes a difference.

This might take a while to see the results.

I cannot comment on the bullet but for issues with the Nosler cartridge. This summer i purchased many boxes of different copper rounds (Love CA) to test out with my 7mm. When i tried to fire the Nosler the bullet would go but the cartridge would expand so big it would get stuck in my barrel. The first one finally came out with using my bolt opening and closing on the cartridge and the second one (yes i fired two thinking the first was cause the barrel was hot) it jammed and the primer came out. I had to use my cleaning rod to pop the cartridge out. No Nosler for me!

I only say all this as maybe it wasn't the foam but quality control with Nosler?

You might want to contact Nosler or whoever's name is on the box and let them know of your experience with them.

Sounds like over pressure to me. Did you notice any more resistance closing the bolt on a live round vs previous ammo you have fired in the rifle? If the bullet was touching / jammed into the rifling, then you could get excessive pressure. Stuck cases / sticky bolts are indicators of excessive pressure. Could be ammo was over charged in production. Definitely contact ammo manufacturer.

LaH - no it went in smooth and all the other rounds i shot went in smooth (4 other manf.). I was going to- just lazy on my part for not doing it. Things got busy the week after i went to the range and I figured with an email that far out they may not care too much. I guess i can shoot them an email with some info from the box, just to let them know.
