Compact Digital Cameras

Hello: Not sure this is the best category to post this question but I'm sure about everyone uses one. I'm searching for a small, compact digital camera. One that easily fits in a pocket and is carried most of the time. I don't need one with all the bells and whistles, just one that takes pretty good quality pics. My price range is + or - $100 on the net. Any suggestions? Thanks for your input!!!

Go to your local Walmart and take I look. I picked up a Canon PowerShot 20 megapixels for right around $100. The higher the pixels the better the picture, should have multiple choices there.

This far from the truth with small sensor compacts. More megapixels means more noise, worse high ISO performance, and bigger files.

The Sony w720 is a solid inexpensive compact, but even it's 16 megapixels is a bit much for the tiny sensor. I wish it were 8 or 10.

I am disappointed with the battery door latch on the Nikon Coolpix cameras I have owned. Two of them have broken ( I forget the model #) I was attracted by the water and shockproof claim of the s31. I'm going to look for another brand.

Ya okay, I'm not a camera guru and never will pretend to be. OP is asking for something simple with no bells and whistles.....all that camera talk is irrelevant in my opinion. He just wants to take pictures, most likely on auto focus. I know my 20 megapixel camera pictures are 10 times better than my 12 megapixel Canon rebel in this aspect.....so as far as I'm concerned, the more megapixels the better.

Just my experience.

Just looked, Nikon CoolPix is what I have, model L28. Done good for what I use it for, best when put on my tripod.

I have an Olympus "Tough". I got it cause it's waterproof and I have used it for underwater photos/videos while snorkeling in the Caribbean. I'm actually on my 2nd one; the 1st finally pooped out after 3 or 4 trips to saltwater destinations where I routinely used it in/under water. You can find manufacturer refurbished ones (with full factory warranty) for around $100 on ebay. When the one I have now craps out after 1 too many dunkings in saltwater I'll probably just get another of the same thing. Without using it in the water like I do I'm sure it would hold up considerably longer.

I have been using a Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W560, 14.1 mega pixels. This year after the elk was down it wouldn't work. Lens would extend was all. Lense wouldn't retract to fit back in case. Once it warmed up next day it was fine. I was forced to cell phone pics on that one which was sure a disappointment. It was probably 15 degrees out. I will have something different this year. Might be something to check before the hunt? Think I will leave next camera in the freezer over night to check.

Just got back online after having my computer in for servicing. I was infected severly with a large number of viruses. Techs at Staples cleaned it up and installed a program for protection so hopefully I'm covered from this kinda problem in the future. Thanks for all the great replies and info. I'll use all your input in making my decision to purchase. I'll probably head down to Walmart and get a look at the various models suggested. Thanks again!!!
