Hello All! I've been hunting Colorado 42/421 Archery OTC elk for the last 7 years and finally decided to unload my preference points. I decided to apply for and have drawn a Unit 66 Archery Elk tag. I will be spending a week in the unit late July to put boots on the ground and hopefully find the area I want to hunt this September. So far I am planning on looking into the La Garita and Powderhorn Wilderness areas. My goal isn't to kill a monster bull but to put myself in a position to have an opportunity at a bull. Would love to hear any input anyone has on this unit, potential areas to start looking for elk, and what kind of hunt I can expect to have. Thanks in advance!

I have hunted the powderhorn wilderness area and gave some info to a guy from ill. If you pm me I'll give you some info. Would prefer to talk on phone. I am headed to gmu 84 to scout it out over the next week and a half. I will be leaving on monday 6-27-16 and be back 7-07-16.

That's a quality hunt.....get off the beaten path SE of Lake city and you should glass up some solid animals on NF land. If your not already Id hunt the opening weekend + a few days if you can. Animals are very patternable due to lite summertime, hiking, motorized traffic.
