Hello all-
Well, we drew this ml tag for Colorado this fall and am inquiring if anyone has hunted units 23 and 33. We probably won't make it into the Flat Tops b/c of my dad and uncle's limited mobility. Unfortunately, due to the fact that we don't live in the area, we are limited obtaining information about these units. I have gone over topo maps and google earth repeatedly, but that is not the same as someone who has hunted this area before. I have been using a number of different internet forums w/o much help. This is perhaps my dad's last hunt out west b/c of his age, but I would like to be able to give him a chance at an elk. I am not asking where your favorite "honey hole" is, just some info to point us in the right direction. Maybe an area to camp, an area where there are a "few" less roads, high spots of the unit. I realize that this will be a hunt that has a lot of other hunters in the area, and the key to finding elk is to not find people. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Is a drop camp out of the question? That would run around $1500 p/p and they pack out your Elk for you.

Last time I took an older guy up I rented a horse from Sombrero to carry all of our gear. He was able to walk in a couple of miles to the camp site (I picked a mostly flat trail) and the horse carried most of our gear.

Don't post much - kind'a new to this site too - but HAD to offer a tip of the cap to the two guys above willing to help Nat...ya don't see this kind of sportsmanship very often but when you do, it's very refreshing and makes MY day...Good luck to all of you this season, especially Nat's Dad AND the two Samaritans...

I've never hunted those areas I have hunted unit 25 on the other side of the flat tops, I will say that you will have company, due to it being an OTC archery unit. There are a lot of elk and as said above a drop camp may help you guys out a lot. If you do rent a horse I do suggest having horse experience as it can be a pain having a horse if you aren't sure what ur doing. But sombrero does have good horses. There are a lot of outfitters in the area that I'm sure always have openings and you may be able To get them to come down on their price a little bit coming this close to the season. I outfit and I do a lot of drop camps it gives you all the gear and a way in and out while still being able to hunt your own way. Some outfitters will even pack ur gear to ur spot of choice. This can be beneficial as their camps are assigned so you are at a camp that may or may not have been used already. Not all do this but usually they don't charge nearly as much if you do it this way. This also depends on ur camp gear as some things are really hard to pack that's why some outfitters don't like doing this cause they know how to pack their gear efficiently as they have done it a lot. New gear poses a threat

I could probably help you out on where to find elk in unit 24 but with limited mobility it will be useless because it is a 5 mile hike into rough country...I would suggest just paying the money for a drop camp as others suggested it will be money well spent do a lot of research before you lay your money down !
