I was lucky enough to draw a 1st Rifle - Bull Elk tag in Unit 66, south of Gunnison, CO this year. I live in the Front Range and am beginning my research and scouting with a trip down to the unit this weekend. I understand there is a lot of opportunity between Uncompahgre National Forest, Gunnison NF and multiple Wilderness areas. Does anyone have any experience in this unit?

I will be backpacking in and looking to get deep/remote away from jeep/ATV trails. I plan to hunt through the entire season and would appreciate any insight that you may have on the area. I'll be calling into the Warden and CPW offices in the coming days and making multiple backpacking/scouting trips throughout the summer. If you're in the area and looking for someone to get outdoors with PM me!

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum you should introduce yourself in the new members area. I used to guide in 66 and love the 1st rifle season in the back country can be some tuff country but you will find yourself succesful as long as you hunt hard and spent some time learning the lay of the land.
