Four Carolina boys heading out to chase some elk with bows in September. We're planning to check out the Mt. Zerkel Wilderness north of Steamboat Springs. Any advice on places within the wilderness area or nearby we should check out? We're planning to pack in and are willing to get off the beaten path; we understand the area may be a little crowded with OTC hunters like ourselves.

I have been to the zirkle wilderness a few times. What made you choose that area? You must know something about it. First posts asking where to go usually don't get you too far.

Just looked for a area with no motor access. Found it looking on google maps. As read some stuff about it. We pretty much know the area we want to hunt just was looking for some insight on pressure and if the area was decent. Me and my buddy went in 2011 to unit 55 where I took a decent 5x6, but were not very pleased with the amount of atvs and hunters we ran into.
We want to be able to backpack in as far as necessary and setup camp. Or just move with the elk once we find them. Zirkel looks like it has large areas that aren't really near any trails and roads would be one of the biggest reasons we choose it.

I hunted the area right along the divide 2 years ago. Don't know if I could put you on bulls, but I can sure tell you some areas to avoid. Shoot me a pm, if your interested, I'd be happy to share my limited knowledge of the unit.

So when will you be there? I have hunted there over the years and have had good luck. The area is large and can get confusing if you are not familiar with mountain terrain. If you are there when I am (last week of September) I am sure I will recognize your accent. If me and my hunting partner see you we will point you in good direction.

Try not to mess with the outfitters. They prize their territory etc...

Let me know or send me a private message.

Hello Everyone,

Looks like I am a couple years late on this thread, just hoping to hear more relating to the post. A friend of mine has been to the area for 3-4 years with moderate success. Myself and two others are leaving SC and VA for 2nd rifle...going solo and have been pouring over the maps of this area, first time elk hunting first time in the area. Would love to hear if yall had any luck following these posts or insights...

Hunted the area 3 years ago...week after muzzleloader season...lots of sign but never saw an elk. The effects of a huge pine beetle left the area looking pretty stark. After running into another hunter with horses a few miles in he said that the elk got ran out during the muzzle loader season. Trout fishing was amazing though up in the lakes.
