I am thinking about putting in for unit 57 for a muzzleloader elk hunt. Has anyone hunted that unit or familiar with it? I was interested in how much pressure the unit gets. Also noticed a big piece of private land in the middle of it so wasn't sure how much that might affect things?
Thanks

57 is a good area its on my radar for a muzzle loader tag this year. It only takes 3 PP for non residents. I have hunted area 86 that borders 57 and have always seen some great elk in that area during the muzzle loader and archery seasons. I know a few residents in salida that hunt it as much as possable and are always bringing out great bulls. There is a lot of public land in this area its can be moderate to extreme country very rocky with dense trees. but still some great glassing country. Hope this helps and good luck.

Thanks for the info. Your making it sound pretty good. I have 3 points and am seriously considering putting in for this unit. From goggle earth it seems like there are a lot of roads throughout the unit which brings up my next concern of getting away from the roads and thus getting away from other hunters.

I'm also looking at 57, for 1st rifle. I'm finding threads that give conflicting info; great access, little access, lots of bulls, few bulls. Really just beginning my research for 2016, so I have time. Hopefully I'll be able to put a solid plan together.
