I will be elk hunting first rifle season in Colorado's DMU 4 around Black Mtn and Oliphant Mount. I will be backpacking in. If anyone has any insight into elk movement, areas, etc., I would be grateful. PM me with any help.
Haven't hunted it but I live in unit 4 elk herds are healthy, although I did count 67 elk killed on the highway between Craig and my house a 22 mile stretch over the winter, there's another 20 miles north of Me. There were 5 good Bulls and 10 cows killed between Hayden and Craig as well and that's just what I seen running through there every few weeks. They clean those off the road quick. On hwy 13 they will let them set. But there's still a lot of elk and a lot of hunters
You are looking in a good area. Keep in mind that there will still be plenty of people back there. Gmu 4 has a lot of horseback hunters and a roads are never very far away. That said, you are looking into an area with less pressure than most of the unit. Backpacking in may be a hindrance. The elk get very nomadic during the rifle seasons. They'll be in your drainage one day and gone the next. Gmu 4 is more about playing off the created pressure from other hunters than it is about traditional hunting tactics.
