Hello, My name is Kyle. New to the forums seen lots of good feedback so I figured I would create a post and see what knowledge I can get.

Just looking for some friendly advice from some more experienced people in Colorado. Grew up hunting whitetail in Michigan. Picked up an over the counter elk tags for archery season.

Curious as to what would be a good unit to check out. This past weekend August 29-30th I spent hiking/hunting around Unit 421. Lots of sign of elk but no sight of any.I was around trail 279 on a trail that branched off named salt creek went into a couple patches of woods. Followed some trails and scat and eventually ended up waiting on the edge of a field waiting for something to come in the evening and nothing ever showed besides a coyote. Wouldn't come close enough for a shot at him sadly.

I have a long weekend coming up from Sept 3-7th. Wondering if I am in a good unit already or if there is a better one to check out over the long weekend. Also curious on certain areas within other units I.E. rivers, mountain tops, creeks.

Look forward to hearing back if anyone else has any advice at all for first time DIY in Colorado. Currently living in Colorado Springs so unit 421 is quite a drive although I do not mind. Curious about the units near White River National forest or anywhere around Steamboat Springs
- Kyle

Hey, welcome to the forum. There is a lot of good info on here and the guys are pretty badass. It's best to introduce yourself first on a seperate post.
Colorado otc tags are tough man, you better like to hike, get at least a mile off the road. Most locals are in shape and hike far, non res guys don't get to far in so you have to find the happy medium. With as hot as it is I would look for timberline areas, high country, wallows, water. Right now they aren't talking much, you might hear a young bull scream at night but it's to warm. Be patient if you're finding fresh sign then you're close, just need to get a little closer. Best of luck
