Hi all, I am new to this forum… and for the most part, new to hunting deer in Colorado. However we have hunted Elk in Gunnison and deer throughout Wyoming and Nebraska. This year I drew 2nd season buck-only for these units (18, 28, 37, & 371). I am taking 3 of my favorite guys with me, my brother and my two sons. These 4 units consist of thousands of acres of National Forest access and is almost overwhelming to decide where to even start. I have scouted some land around Grandby, Fraser and Hot Sulphur Springs but so far I haven’t found a good location to base out of. Last year when scouting elk, we saw a lot of deer in unit 28 that is why I entered it in my draw selections initially.

Does anyone on here have some recommendations where to get started? We will be on foot (no horses or ATVs). These young boys have been hunting with me for years so we are not worried about covering some ground. But do you guys recommend basin areas, water areas, highland, dark timber, etc?

We have all the time in the world and but I am just uncertain where to base from and could really use a friendly tip!

And yes I have scoured this forum and absorbed as much as I can from your previous posts. Just looking for some new ideas.

Thanks all

I hunted these sections last year as a left-over tag. There are hunters everywhere. First thing I'd recommend is calling the wildlife biologist and asking plenty of questions. The weather leading up to the hunt could impact location significantly. I did this last year, and he gave me some pretty good tips. I'd also recommend getting as far off the road as you can get. I started last year about 1.5 miles off the road, and ran into guys further back each day. There were signs everywhere the deer were pushed much further back.

PM me, and I can give you some specifics to where I was and what I saw. I general it was the border between GMU 37 and 28.

Your deffinitly going to be up there with a lot of people there is no doubt about it. I have hunted middle park my hole life and if your looking for some were to camp and go in from there i would suggest looking into some of the trailheads. gmu 18,28,37, is were you are going to find all the people do to the amount of access roads and such half of area 37 is private on the highway 9 side therefor giving you limited access but still there are some great access points and you may not see as many people. Will you be in a camper or tenting it?
