I've got a 3rd season deer tag for 551 and was hoping someone may have some experience in this area? Looking for some general areas worth looking over. I may try to make a trip out from Oklahoma this summer to get eyes on before season starts. Would love to find some areas where I may be able to get away from the road hunters? Please feel free to PM me! Thanks in advance for any tips!

You can find out how to get away from road hunters by looking at Google Earth, onXmaps or the Colorado Hunt Atlas. Just figure most guys don't hunt further than 1 or at the most 2 miles from the roads. Switch the base map on the CO Hunt Atlas to USA Topo Maps.
Thanks for the heads up on Colorado hunt Atlas, I had never seen that one before. I use Google earth and on X maps religiously but that is the first time I've seen the other one. I typically try to get as far as I can from the road but this is a huge unit that I've never seen before. Hoping to find some general guidance on areas to glass for mulies. Thanks!

The way that you get away from roads is to head to Alaska or Canada. Unless you are hunting a wilderness area here in Colorado you will have a road close by. In the units that I hunt I can hike for 5 or more miles without crossing a road but there is always a road closer than 1/2 mile from me.

The real secrete is to head into canyons that there are no roads and odds are there won't be very many hunters there either. The meaner and nastier the canyon is the better to avoid other hunters.

I've never hunted this unit, but do live nearby. I'd suggest looking around the Waldo Canyon burn area. I suspect the burn being a few years old now might harbor quite a few elk and deer. Having said that, Pike NF is your best option, knowing the unit is relatively heavily populated around Colorado Springs and Woodland Park.

Good luck.

You must be thinking of another unit? 551 isn't near the Waldo Canyon burn area. Maybe your thinking of the Hayman burn area? 551 isn't in there either but 511, 501, and 51 are.

Oops, Sorry! I was thinking unit 511. 551 is much further south and west.
