Looking into an archery elk hunt North East of pagoda springs, Colorado. Unit 78. Was wondering if anyone had any tips or information on elk success in the area. First archery elk hunt.
Success is low as in many OTC units in Colorado, but that doesn't mean elk aren't there. They are in the overlooked areas (sometimes close to the road) and in the nastiest, deepest stuff (sometimes not so close to the road). As far as SW Colorado goes, that's one of the more rugged areas around - can work for or against you depending on how prepared you are.
Ive been hunting archery deer in that area for a few years now and ive always paid attention to the elk. They always seem to know where they trails are and end up in pretty deep basins several ridges from the nearest trails. If I was hunting elk id find the most remote, rough, deep canyons, the kind where you question why you hunt. That's where ive seen them the most.
