I finally drew a tag for unit 77,78,and 771 2nd season rifle mule deer tag. I am wondering if anyone has any experience with this unit that they would like to share. This will be my first out of state hunting trip and I am really looking forward to it. I am going with a guy I work with and he has elk hunted the area, and he said he saw some nice mule deer bucks so we decided to go hunt mule deer. Any advice or input would be appreciated. Thanks

I was up on vacation the first week of august and I saw a lot of deer on highway 64 south of pagosa springs. A lot were in the san juan nf. I have never hunted the area but travelling through 78 and 771 this is the area that I saw the highest deer densities. Good luck I would love to have that tag!

Thanks for the information. This is the third year I put in for the tag and I drew one. I am really looking forward to the hunt. It will be my first out of state hunting trip.

I have elk hunted north of Pagosa Springs around Williams Lake. We saw some really good bucks during first rifle season, would have been 2006 and 2007.

I have a town house in Pagosa Springs and there are some great bucks in the area. The area above Poison Park is a good area. You are in a good area to hunt mule deer. However, there will be a lot of pressure from Elk hunters and the mule deer will be high up in the mountains unless the weather brings them down. The big bucks will not be in the RUT yet and it makes killing one a real challenge. The area South of Pagosa down toward the Colorado and New Mexico state line is great mule deer country also. That is where the Jicarilla is located which if you are mule deer hunter you know is the "holy grail" of mule deer hunting. If your buddy has hunted Elk then he knows some good areas around Pagosa Spring. You just have to hunt high for those big mule deer bucks. It is a great area. Good Luck.

My dad is in that area now archery hunting for Elk. His daily reports have him not seeing many elk but "losing count" of the number of deer they have seen. He is hunting off of Blanco Basin Rd.
