Unit 18 is where I live. The country is steep and the timber is thick (not a sit and glass kind of hunt) but there are a few nice bulls in there. Unit 35 is good during archery but the west half is basically private and the elk are well aware of this sanctuary and will head there quickly as the season gets going. The maroon bells in unit 43 hold quite a few elk but again the country can be pretty rough. If you want more specifics you can pm me Good luck

Raghorn - I think he's interested in deer. There are quite a few decent to good areas on the west slope that can be drawn as 2nd choice. The only area I have any experience in your list is 43. As mentioned above, this is a rugged unit and requires some solid scouting. As downside of the unit may be how the deer winter in the Gunnison Valley this year. I have heard that it has been a tough winter with a lot of snow in the area which may be hard on a herd still reeling from the winter two years ago. Hopefully, the herd will pull through, but it is something to consider and research before putting in.

I apologize, you were asking about deer. We have seen lots of really nice bucks on the winter range in 18. The deer in 35 still haven't fully recovered from the winter of 08, same with 43. There are still some real studs in there ....just not as many. I don't think you could go wrong with a deer tag in any of these units but I would have to lean towards 18. There are lso good deer in 181 and and 371 which are also units open to you with a unit 18 tag.

I know 35 pretty well and i agree with raghorn, it still hasn't fully recovered from the winter kill, but if you search hard enough theres still some decent bucks around.
