I drew a 2nd season tag for unit 54 in Co. I was wondering if anyone here had any experience in the unit that time of year. The other 2nd season tags I have had, I have always packed in to 10,000-12,000 feet and hunted timberline. Not sure if this would be the best bet in 54 or not. I expect a tough hunt with the elk hunters and timber down lower, so I'm kinda hoping the bucks stay high until large amounts of snow hit.

I've not hunted unit 54, but I hunted unit 55 last year 2nd rifle, there was a bunch of deer still at timberline on the last day of the season. However, the season dates were about a week earlier last year so they might be headed down before the season ends - I think it just depends on the weather. There was a little snow last year on Thursday& Friday, I killed a nice buck that Friday in the snow at 11,100'.
