Just a heads-up for anyone hoping to hunt the N.W. Arctic caribou this season.

The Dept. of the Interior has just announced that the season is closed to everyone but qualified subsistence resource users of the area through June of 2017.

The herd numbers have been dropping and the migratory patterns have done some changing, so they are taking steps to protect the local residents.

If you're booked with a guide or transporter out of Kotzebue, better check with them and see if you are effected by this.

That sucks. I knew the herd numbers have been going down for some time now but I didn't know it was that bad.

I wonder how much extra pressure the CAH and the Porcupine herd is going to get this year? Or next?
