Thought I read somewhere that if you are camping on public land you need a permit, does anyone know if this is true? For instance we are camping in the high country in region h, would we need any type of permit? I can't find anything on it, but just making sure. Thanks!

im not 100% certain but I think that's only if you stay longer than a certain number of days and maybe even if you have so many people in a certain area.

On National forest, no. There is a 14 day limit and then you have to move your camper trailer, but you can move it and dump your tanks and its all good I think. On some of the improved campgrounds they charge a fee, but I don't know of any permit required. I think the public in that area is National Forest, so its all ok to camp.

Thanks Againstthewind! My cousin in Wyoming thought maybe we would need one for safety purposes when you pack in off the beaten path, but wasn't for sure.

They do have sign in sheets at trailheads to Wilderness and stuff like that, and Yellowstone and Grand Teton require backcountry camping permits, but I am pretty sure the National Forest doesn't, or at least I have never bothered to get one. That may have been where you read it. Its just National Parks I am pretty sure. I think the rangers occasionally check the sign in sheets, but I think it is up to your family to notify search and rescue if you don't check in on time. My mom called search and rescue on me one time. It got late in the day and I hit a snow storm and just decided to hunker down for the night under a rock. I was pretty comfy and sound asleep when they found me, but pretty embarrassed.

Thanks again for the info. I won't worry about it then, my cousin finally drew his sheep tag after 25 yrs! He thought they had to get permits or something, but he doesn't do any pack in hunts so he thought I should check. Sure wish I could make it out there to go with him, but with our deer hunt coming quick I won't make it.
