My wife and her girlfriend are headed to South Africa on a photo safari in late August and I'm going to surprise here with a new camcorder to take along with her digital camera.

If I could get some input from some of you guys as to what to start looking at. I'd like to keep the cost around $500-$600.

I am no expert on the subject but we use a JVC Everio and it works great, takes HD video and photos, and the batteries last pretty well.

Thanks jjenness, I'm looking for something that takes good quality vid within my price range that will be fairly simple for my wife to use. I'll check out the JVC model you mentioned.

How about her camera? Most now a days shoot vid and stills in HD.
