Has anyone checked out this new ul tent by cabelas? i have been looking for a ul tent this fall and seen that new xpg in the new cabelas magazine $399. I had my eyes set on the big agnes fly creek ul 3, and can get it for $240 with out the foot print and the cabelas comes with the footprint. the big agnes footprint is $70 so i would still be cheaper with the BA but was wondering what your guys thoughts are between the two. Thanks guys

Weird this conversation popped up, I have been looking at this tent a lot today. My FIL has his heart set on the XPG ul3 so I decided to look in to it more. He is a diehard Cabelas guy so he is hard to sway but I always try. This tent seems pretty impressive with its size and weight (3lb 12oz) for a 3 man. It's labeled as 3 season and looks pretty tough so I have been impressed so far. I was curious as well to see what guys on here thought but I figured a Cabelas brand tent wouldn't be super popular with the hardcore guys. Apparently it was on sale a couple of weeks ago for $350 which seems like a good price for the tent if you can find a sale. Coming with the footprint and gear rack seems like a nice plus.

I would make the decision depending on how close to the store you are. For either the Big Agnes or the Cabela's. If I lived close to a Cabela's I would go with theirs because if they put their name on a product they stand behind it. I have never had an issue returning a product to Cabela's for any reason especially if their name is on the product. That being said, if your closer to a store that sells the Big Agnes I would chose that one if they have good customer service. I know we buy products and don't want to think about having problems with them, but if you do, I feel it is always easier to bring it in to a store for a return than shipping it back.

With that being said, I have not had any experience with Big Agnes products.

Reading the one review that was made on the Cabela's tent would probably steer me away from it now.
Although I would consider having a tent with a side door versus front. I don't know if your using it for 3 people and thinking side door you would be crawling over someone, but I don't think there is anyway of not disturbing someone in a 3 person tent if one wants out. Just my thoughts.

They just re-did the XPG line, the new ones have a front door. All the reviews out there on the backpacking sites are from the older models.

I crawled in the XPG UL this weekend at my local Cabelas. It is basically the same as the BA except a bright yellow rainfly and an overhang about the entry door. Rain or condensation dripping into the tent when entering/exiting can be a problem with the BA. I dont think you could go wrong with either. The quality appears to be similar. I've used a BA Fly Creek and liked it too.

I'd make my decision based off of: sale price, local store location, fly color.

Definitely can't go wrong with a tired and tested product like that especially for that price. I think we are set on the Cabelas XPG. I'm splitting it with my FIL and he's old school and doesn't like ordering stuff online plus Cabelas is close. I'm waiting for it to go on sale again and will snatch it up. I'll come back and leave a review here once I give it a test.
