Is it worth it given the current situation with points creep. I don't think I will ever catch 61 or the units in the nw part of the state. What part of the unit was burned? How has that effected the unit.

If you are sold on 76 you could draw that this year or hope to catch the smoke pole tag. Right now you are 3 points behind the smoke pole tag and can draw the archery tag for sure. Burning points is a tough decision for sure.

Burn em. One less guy the rest of us have to compete against for the rest of us in the nw corner;) Ha I'm in the same boat though gonna burn my deer points this year for the same reasons.

I am a non resident so we would not be competing for tags. I am on the fence. Wish new Mexico draw would come out before I have to make my Colorado decision.

Tough decision Lab, but I burnt 9 points last year on 49. Was contemplating 76 to. I was doing the same thing you are doing...chasing 61. Here is my take if you care. I have hunted CO as a non resident 7 times. Every time I have hunted I have seen or had a chance at a great bull whether it was in an over-the-counter unit or draw unit. I am still unsuccessful however, either way just wanting to let you know like some of the other guys that there are good bulls in pretty much every unit if you can get back off the beaten path. My point with all this is even if you catch it and are unsuccessful will the wait be worth it? If you could just enjoy the hunt every year or two that may be more satisfying. I think this is what I've realized, and the opportunity at a great animal still exists without getting caught up in all the hype. I am still caught up as I have 8 mule deer points and am wondering where and how to burn them...lol. Just a thought! Bow hunting is hard even if you are in a draw unit. No guarantees...at least for me.

I have been hunting colorado my hole life. I feel that area 76 is one of the best elk areas in the state i would hunt 76 over all the nw units in the state 14 points is a lot to burn but there are some giant bulls in that area i guided in 66 right on the border of 76 and always saw good bulls. I am a non resident now but if i had one area i could hunt it would be 76. There is alot of public land and its a great area for glassing up high. Are you planning on a DIY hunt or Guided?

Have 14 points myself and will be burning them next year or the year after for 76. Once I have the time off work figured out I will burn them there and not bother building them in the future just keeping lower tier unit.

Hunted area 76 in 2012 archery. Very demanding hunt. Lost 14 lbs. in 6 days of hunting. Saw many bulls in the 300" range but couldn't connect. Hunted northeast of Creede. Elk where mostly above 9000 ft. third week of September.

Had a friend that archery hunted 76 last year had the time of his life, took a 340 bull in middle ute creek drainage, he said without horses he couldn't of got it done. Wished I had 14 pts I'd apply for 76. Good luck.
