I have been thinking about booking a Brownie hunt in 2018. Just in the early stags of fining the right outfitter for me.
Looking for respectable bear nice and mature bear not world class! I would like to try it with a bow, but if it comes down to the wire I would Take one with a gun. Has anybody hunted with Brian Peterson from Ugak bay? So many outfiiters up there and price ranges go from 15000 all the way up to 32000! Any Ideals would help out a lot! Thanks

Sam Rohrer at SAMs Kodiak bear camp would be my first choice, or Tom Kirstein. Tom caters to bow hunters, Sam is the best. Pm me and I can give you some ideas. I know a lot of those guys.

Some other outfitters to consider: Bob Cusack out of Lake Gibraltar, Mel Gillis who is still running the Sandy River Lodge on the peninsula, Steve Morris in Haines, or Brent Jones of AAA Alaskan outfitters. I've taken 3 Browns and one grizzly in Alaska, these guys all do a nice job. Only guy I would stay away from would be Jerry Jaques. PM if you want any more info about there camps.

I hunted deer with Brian. Great guy, great equipment, really knows his stuff. I'd say he's not big on guiding bowhunters. If you were a return client he has hunted with often, he would be fine with it but I doubt he'd take you bowhunting for brown bear right off.

Gillis is no longer guiding as far as I know. He doesn't have the Sandy any longer.

I know he had sold it to a Native corp, I did'nt know he was done now. When I was there he had some health issues but was doing well. Nice guy, you always new were you stood with Mel.

Check out :

http://www.kodiakoutdoors.com/brownbear.php

Kole Kramer guide. He guided Lee Lakosky to his big brown with a bow last fall.

Dennis Harms- Aliulik peninsula.

Red lake unit.

Afognak wilderness lodge- Luke Randall. Look up the big bear killed on camera that runs at hunter and guide kills at a few feet for a realistic idea of what your trying to do.

Look at the best areas for the best chance for a bow. Don't spend 15 large on a low budget Kodiak road system- no chance at a bear with a bow hunt.

I guess I was wrong. I talked with some friends that would know and they say Mel is taking a few hunts.

I would agree with avoiding the one you mentioned but I know plenty that are even worse. I just won't mention them on the open forum.

Do serious research before booking up here. We have some great guides but plenty of the "not so great" ones too.
