Still confused,.....For NR Elk in MT one could pay $50 for a Bonus PT to help them get drawn for the General license

I also thought they changed so you can acquire a Preference Pt for unit-specific LE units for $20? Is that correct?

If that's the case can one now buy separately or do you have to apply for General before getting into Pref Pt action? Was on the website but having trouble deciphering.

Can call FWP Monday but just wondering if anyone can help clarify.

Thanks

You can buy a preference point for the general license for $50 but it's unnecessary as there have been leftovers for the last few years. You must apply for the general and then apply for an elk permit and check the box saying you want to participate in the bonus point program. If you fail to draw the specific permit you will still have the general license and you will gain a bonus point for next year. I believe the bonus point is $20 plus the nonrefundable $9 app fee.

Here's a quote from MFW&P: "The permit must be used with a general elk hunting license. A permit is not a second license and does not allow the holder to kill an additional animal. Rather, it expands the opportunity to hunt for a species in a particular hunting district allowing the hunter to harvest a Bull Elk or either-sex.

Residents must hold a valid general elk license to apply. Nonresidents must hold a big game or elk combination license to apply. State refund policy does not allow refunds under $5. If you are unsuccessful for only an elk permit, a refund will not be sent"

Just to apply for one species in Montana you must buy a base hunting license $15, a conservation license $10, the bonus point fee $20 (if you ever want to draw you must buy) and an application fee (between $5-$50).
