My buddies and i are trying to plan out our next DIY elk hunt. we have had success in the past in colorado but werre looking to try something new. we hunted in salmon idaho 2 years ago and battled the entire 2 weeks with the wolves. i am just wondering how bad are the wolves in the Bob <Marshall? i would just hate to spend the time effeort and money to go all the way out there and battle them again. any information on this we would greatly appreciate thank you...

There are plenty of wolves in the Bob Marshall. There are also plenty of grizzly bears. The Bob isn't loaded with high game numbers, but there is certainly good hunting in there, for the dedicated hunter. Don't expect a bunch of vocal bulls. They know rifle hunters (and wolves) are out there listening.

In the Bob, treat the trails like you would roads elsewhere on public land. If you get a little ways off of them, you will find the best hunting.

Good luck!

If you put forth the effort to get into the Bob and are not successful in taking an animal the country there will make up for it. Really unique in the Bob, however, wolves and grizzlies are very present there. There is an early rifle season that starts Sept 15 in unit 150 and that is when and where most of the elk are harvested since it is during rut. Once the snow really starts to fly getting in there becomes very difficult, but it starts to push the elk out. I have done a couple hike in hunts on the north end of the Bob, but stock is your best friend in there or having access to some. I have some buddies that hunt the east side of the Bob and deal with grizzlies all the time but are successful because they are both there for the same reason...tough balance. To up your chances unit 415 might be worth checking out, you can take spikes, and boarders the Bob. In my opinion bowhunters are the most successful even though they compete with the early rifle hunt in 150 that starts later. Hope that helps...
