How many of you guys have built a black gun or what we have now labeled as Modern Sporting Rifles?

Personally I enjoy shooting them and thinking about doing a build just for fun again here after the Covid-19 stuff simmers down.

They're a lot of fun to shoot, but I'm just not attracted to them. The closest thing I have is an M1A.
I'm more a traditional guy. Bolt action, wood stocks or lever guns is what I like best. I do own several rifles with "plastic" stocks however! Just not "platforms"!

My favorite tactical rifle is the M14, just not as much fun to play legos with because parts aren't mass produced.

Same here, I will probably get one someday. I have a M1 30 carbine and I can never shoot it without emptying the whole clip, it's a lot of fun. I am afraid that if I get a black gun I will go broke shooting it. I really like to shoot.

I have a couple, never built one. I dont really enjoy shooting them. I even cast and powder coat my own .223 bullets and I still hardly shoot them.

I always wanted a fully automatic Tommy gun, AKA The Chicago typewriter...or whatever they called it.

Too bad they are 20K after permits. They do sell a model you can buy but its only semi-automatic. So I guess its just a pipe dream unless I hit the lottery.

I don't have any of the AR style guns. Like AKaviator, everything I have is the traditional bolt actions, levers and a single shot. I do have a semi auto .22 rifle. Just never wanted an AR style gun. When they first started being sold on the market, I couldn't see any use for them except for burning up a lot of ammo "plinking". My .22 was a lot cheaper. How times have changed. Don't think I'll ever buy one.

built my first and only, would like to build a .300blk in the near future.

16" mid-length gas, 5.56, 7 twist,
4-16x scope,
it's my Zombie Coyote rifle...

We own an AR , thanks to my wife winning one at an NRA Banquet. Otherwise, we probably would not own one. That said, it is enjoyable to shoot, and is surprisingly accurate. 5 shot groups at 100 yards, easily go under an inch using my hand loads developed for another rifle. I’ve never built a load specifically for it, so, not sure what it’s really capable of. memtb

they are just fun guns to shoot. With that said, i grabbed the ruger #1 in 223 to shoot ground squirels.

I’ve got a few buddies that are big into “building” their own, they usually shoot really well, many are half-MOA rifles. They get to talking about “platforms” and “systems” and the virtues of gas blocks and I quickly loose interest in the conversation. I don’t own one, but my Dad has several that my kids like to shoot. One in a 6.8 SPC is extremely accurate (1/4 MOA); my kids have used it on a few deer.30406

I have noticed a trend in the hunting world that most either love them or they could really care less. For whatever reason that is I am not sure.

I think if you liked Arnold Schwarzenegger movies in the 80's.... you always knew you'd own one...

One thing I've noticed....and find amusing is the number of AR guys who don't hunt...never have, probably have 5+ ar15s and never thought about buying a hunting style rifle...
not sure they've seen too many movies, or played too many video games... they're ready for the apocalypse...
Many have red dots... or 3 types of sights on 1 rifle... I think there have been some memes poking fun at these setups with everything and the kitchen sink attached to them...

coming from a slug gun deer state.... having had a red dot sight for years, I switched to a lower power scope and would take that any day over a red dot.

I do feel they may be one of the best beginner guns, for range shooting etc... light kicking, semi auto..... aside from a .22 LR, it's not much of a surprised why they're so popular, plus being able to build them cheaply easily.... like a big kid erector set...

Definitely a lot of people are in to the “tacti-cool” part of it, and more power to them if they are, just not my thing.

I have made the same observation. Most of the guys I know that are into the ARs could care less about hunting, but they love shooting.
