I don't think there is anything strange about the country, elk live in everything from desert sagebrush flats to eastern deciduous forests to the Pacific coast to Rocky Mountain coniferous forests, above timberline and pretty much anything in between.
I am aware of the wide variety of elk habitat, it just happens that my experiences elk hunting have included climbing up and down steep mountains, not hunting alfalfa fields on private ground.

If it's my comment you're talking about, I'm sorry. It was not meant to diminish his trophy or raise any hackles. I would jump at the opportunity to hunt elk in that kind of environment, and certainly do not begrudge anybody who does.
