I am aware of the wide variety of elk habitat, it just happens that my experiences elk hunting have included climbing up and down steep mountains, not hunting alfalfa fields on private ground.Congrats to your friend on an awesome bull!
I don't think there is anything strange about the country, elk live in everything from desert sagebrush flats to eastern deciduous forests to the Pacific coast to Rocky Mountain coniferous forests, above timberline and pretty much anything in between.
This is why I don't like this forum sometimes. There is more than one way to skin a cat.
