I have 8 PP for mule deer. I hunt on a nonresident license but pay taxes on property in unit 81. Unit 81 requires 4 points to draw 4th season.
I am not able to do a rugged hunt, any suggestions?

Thanks Woodtick and those are good units but I don't have enough points for the better seasons. Since the post the MRS has been posted and from that I am thinking to draw for unit 67 Nov 5-13 Nebraska Nov 12-20 New Mexico 2B and unit 52 Oct 29-Nov 2 and Oct 22-26. I have seen a hugh bear around my house for four years and I want to hunt him also. I have seen him in both New Mexico and Colorado, maybe I can find him again.

The MRS has been posted and I don't have enough points for unit 61 or 44 during the good seasons so I think I will draw to unit 67 the third season. Fourth season, I will be hunting Nebraskas Pine Ridge. I got my only long range shot in Ne. 467 yards with 160 gr 7mm.
Thanks Woodtick

With 8 pts. you could draw a muzzleloader in unit 2 which is a premium unit or 35 4th season, 11 4th season, 67 3rd season. Any of these has the potential for a big deer. Remember that 4th season will be in the rut again this year. Of course there are the eastern plains seasons where there are some huge deer but it is almost all private.

Thanks Raghorn Chaser, for the good post. I have had a really trophy deer near my house, only 1/2 mile up a steep mountainside. Last year, I never found him and as much poaching as we had on the winter range, he might be gone. I have a house at 8700ft on the Conejos that joins the national forest. Not very many deer but sometimes a good one. Fourth season takes 4 pts. in unit 81.
The unit 2 muzzleloader fits my schedule best.

Have you looked at 3rd season 22? I hunted 3rd 21 last year, took a nice 170 buck... however, the 4 bigest bucks I saw all came out of 22. Check with the butcher at Laura's Corner in Rangley, the network of roads are good enough but no where near as extensive as 21 (therefore bucks can get older) and 3rd season the bucks are running with the does!!

If you need any help in unit 2 then let me know. It is an awesome unit and you most likely won't see another hunter the whole season. There are alot of big deer in thereand the solitude is priceless.

Raghorn Chaser I could gamble that I could draw 2nd rifle or almost assured i could draw the muzzleloader. Which option do you like best? Are there enough bear in unit 2 to warrant a tag? Ithink I could get a pronghorn license for muzzleloader, just a thought.

Ditto, fishing in Trujillo Meadows Res could be rewarding and The Pinnacles is good and you should be alone. The Pinnacles are above the Conejos and it is very steep and a long way down. Those fish don't see many anglers but it still takes a long leader. I don't fish much but I have done The Pinnacles once.

Where are the Pinnacles at exactly? I usually fish La Manga Creek on the pass at least twice a year. I don't really fish the Conejos too much. Just haven't caught that many fish there.

The area of unit 2 that I would strongly suggest to you would not hold any bears but then again you never know. For the cost I would pass on it. I would get either tag because there is NO pressure in the unit and the deer are totally relaxed but if I was pushed to choose I would have to take the muzzy tag.

I should get a tag for unit 2 muzzleloader. Records show only 1560 deer in that unit. DOW wants 7500. Whats up with that?
I expect deer to be concentrated in the drainages.
Raghorn Chaser, what are your thoughts?
