Best State For A Public Land Muley (w/bow)

Planning a 2013 DIY public land bowhunt

I realize there are a bunch of threads like mine, and I have sifted through them. My brother and I have never hunted the west. We are treestand hunters of whitetails in Southern Illinois. We would like to do a public land muley hunt somewhere. Trophies would be great, but it would be hard for me to pass up a shot at any decent looking buck (since I've never muley hunted before). What state should I focus on? I've read Nebraska is very tough, I've thought SD sounds decent, SW Colorado is not a bad drive at all.

I guess when it comes down to it, quantity would be over quality for our 2013 hunt.

Any opinions?

Also, what books/dvd's would be recommended?

Like you mentioned, Colorado. It will be a very demanding, rewarding hunt successful or not.

Oops, I meant Southeast or South Central Colorado. Is that area decent?

I would look at Unit 2B in New Mexico. It will be hard to draw out, it is a January Archery Hunt during migration. About 2.5% odds of drawing, but someone has to draw out. There is also an early season hunt, end of September about 90% odds of drawing. I'm not sure how good it is early season. Units 2A & 2C are also good ones.

the late hunt in unit 2b can be great, but it is hard to sneak in on a big buck in crunchy snow. you will see alot of deer tho. the early hunt can be very tough. if you dont have the time to scout the unit and find the resident deer its not even worth it. the late rifle hunt in 2b is probably the best. there is alot of hunters, but there is also tons of deer. if the migration is on its nothing to see 300 deer a day.

Can't beat Colorado, the high country is physically demanding so you have to be prepared.
