Hello,
Worked up a really nice load for my 7-08.. 39 gr. Of varget under 140 gr. Berger hunting VLDs. 1/2" @100. 2570 muzzle velocity. My question is. Has anyone else shot these in 7-08 and used them for hunting? And what were the results?? Thanks

DT,
Happy Holidays. the 7mm-08 was my go to rifle for the kids and wife, used it on a lot of elk and as a training round/gun at the range. (really cheap to reload and handles reduced loads well) Your numbers are right on spot with my Accubonds and Partitions we use. I have a little experience with the VLDs and have never had an issue with them, at all. IMO the bullet choices out there today give us a ton of options to choose from. I think any higher end bullet is gonna perform well, especially after we get it dialed in for the gun.

I shoot Bergers in my 22-250 and they are top notch. The 140 grain VLD is on my list for 7 mm rem mag. If you take a harvest with them, let us know how they perform. I currently am shooting the 150 grain nosler accubond LR, and they are top notch as well, and performed well on 2 deer and an antelope. Not sure why I would switch, but it's always good to experiment. The difference may become apparent when I stretch shots out to 500 yards.

I am moving everything over to the VLD's. Currently I use HSM 130gr VLD's in my .270 and it is an absolute nail driver and game taker. I have taken game anywhere from 150yrds to 480yrds....single shot and drop. A buddy of mine took his first bull elk this year with the same round out of his .270 (I let him use my rounds). Shot was 250yrds, shot in the upper back/neck and bull dropped.

Now....my wife shoots a .243 and .300 Rem Mag. Her .243 loves Hornaday 95gr and has taken a few small game (Javelina, Yotes and such). Again a tack driver with that round. Hornaday is no longer making this round they have moved to something else so I am going to load Berger VLD. Her .300 Rem Mag has the best MOA with Federal Trophy Bonded Tipped (or something like that...) 165gr. That round has had a hard time taking down Coues Deer at 330yrds & 400yrds as well as Elk at the same range. It often takes three or more rounds to take an elk down, and yes these are well placed shots. Matter of fact we lost a bull this year with this gun/round at a range of 500yrds. It did not leave a blood trail at all. I watched the bullet vapors all the way to the animal and saw it hit the bread box good. We basically followed its tracks to a canyon bottom and then circled patterned for hours to no avail. Went the next day and still nothing..... I am moving that gun to a Berger VLD hand load now as well.

I am a believer in the VLD's. No matter what caliber or gun.
