Backcountry Archery Elk - 2016 Plan?

Hey All,

Interested in feedback/input on my current 2016 Wyo App plan. My bro and I are looking to do a backcountry Archery Elk hunt during the rut. We're both non-residents, with 5 and 7 points going into this year's draw. Currently looking at unit 40 in the bighorns. Couple questions.

-With seven points, I don't think it makes sense to hold out for any other hunt. 7 points in the special should get any type 9 tag, while going for type 1 archery in a better unit will require max points. Agree?
-For a 7-8 day hunt, does it make sense to have two archery tags? My thought is if we get lucky enough to arrow one elk, the hunt is effectively over for the other after packing out.
-Anyone have experience in 40 relative to the other units in the bighorns? Staying away from units with Wilderness.

Any thoughts are much appreciated.

One tag would be all I wanted to attempt for 7 days. You should be able to draw unit 45? Is it not not considered better than 40?

Are you combining points with your brother? So you would have 6 for the draw?

I'd think trying to kill 2 bulls in 7 days, on a unit I'd never stepped foot in, would be a tall order.

What Fink said. I'd both go, whomever has 7 put in for the tag that way you got a caller and shooter defined. The guy with 5 hold off and draw it in a year or two. That way you could learn the area better. Unless you have time to scout.

Thanks for all the feedback on tags, my bro is fairly close and will scout but I still think it would be a incredible stretch to put down two bulls. Any thoughts on 40 with seven points? I'll look at the MRS for 45 tonight.

If your pref point avg of 6 can draw the unit you pick, than you should both most certainly have tags. You could
hunt 8 days and not see an elk. Or 15 minutes into the first day, 2 bulls could come charging in. Wouldn't want to be
the one that decided to not get the tag if that happens. Tough, but you can both get it done in 7/8 days.

Why don't you both put in for the same unit separately then? Increase your odds of one of you drawing, and if you both draw even better. I don't see any reason not to try and kill 2 elk in a week?
