AZ Coues' Deer Question

This January was our first trip to AZ to archery hunt deer, primarily mulies. While buying our OTC tags, a local told us, "The whitetails are up high and the mulies are all over." Being from PA, no one wanted to shoot a whitetail....at least what we thought were the same species. We did not realize what he was calling a "whitetail," was a Coues'.

Away we went into the Coronado Nat'l. Long story short, I ended up top and killed what I thought was a whitetail. A little disappointed and after a rendezvous @ camp a buddy pointed out that was a Coues' deer and potentially a good one.

So my question to the group: Is this a "trophy Coues' deer?"

As far as Coues deer go that is certainly a really good one. Many people are lucky to even see one let alone take one with a bow.
Congrats!

Yea that looks like a solid buck. To make it Pope and Young it has to score 70" which to me, it looks like that buck would be somewhere around there. Shooting ANY Coues buck with a bow is a great accomplishment!!!!!!

Congrats it looks like a great deer but the only one that can answer if its a "trophy " is you. A trophy animal is in the eye of the beholder. Not everyone is out for the same things in their trophy

So you shot a coues that you didnt know was a coues and youre upset beacuse you wanted a mule deer.
Ive been trying since I was 15 to shoot a coues with a bow, (17yrs now) I would be ecstatic to harvest a buck like that. Ive shot great bucks with a rifle, and big mulies with a bow, but coues are tough. Congrats! Talk about beginners luck
