Couple quick questions before I head out next month to Montana;

Where are folks allowed to drive atv/utv in Montana? State Land and BLM? Just on 2 track roads?
I don't want to deal with them, so wondering what the regulations are. Could not find much on the website and all I got was voicemail at F&G.

Appears that solid orange vest must be worn (no camo orange) and must be 400", but what about an orange hat?Hat appears to be optional.... just curious.

Thanks guys!

I believe this year you have to get a permit sticker for it as well. You might want to check on that.

Most areas differ. If you're on Forest Service land, stick with roads you may venture off where it's not marked. Same with BLM. Each area can have their own regs though. IF you're on block management land, Che k each BMA map and rules on back they generally want you to stay on roads. Which often includes well defined two tracks, the maps usually have those highlighted and labeled. Some will specifically say...off road travel permitted for game retrieval only....

Please pay close attention, don't do it just because some other hunters are doing it. 5 years ago an BLM ranger showed up and wrote hefty tickets to some guys camping at Fred Robinson bridge. Other hunter turned them in for illegal ATV use.

Glad you're asking, that is a good ethical way to be.

I have found that the F&G will very seldom be able to give you a correct answer. But if you call the area National Forest Service office or BLM office you should be able to get the correct rules. Also most National Forest Service offices will offer a trail map of where you can and can't ride a ATV.

Also as a non resident of Montana you will need to purchase a Non Resident Annual Use Permit to ride there.
