Son and I drew December cow tags in unit 10. Wondering what type of camping conditions we'll be in for? I've already narrowed down where we're going to start. Are quads/side by sides useful in this area? I plan on lots of glassing to find elk, then form a plan to get em. Are there any places down there to just flat out avoid? Any and all tips or suggestions are welcome!

I take my atv everywhere I hunt now. With the limited logging going on the roads don't get graded anymore and after a few years they are pretty rough.

Thanks for the reply WB, that is my feeling as well. I don't want to drag the side by side down there and not be able to use it. I will be tent camping with my son and likely my dad..not sure what typical December conditions are in Arizona.

Haven't checked the Dec weather conditions (shouldn't be too bad) but as far as bringing a four-wheeler or side x side, if you are planning on hunting the Big Boquillas Ranch (50% of unit 10) they are not allowed. The good news is that camping is!

I am sure you have checked out the standard AG&F info for the unit here;

Good luck and have a great hunt with your son! I'll be chasing lopes there with my bow in August but it will be a little warmer then...

I was planning to stay off the ranch unless we just can't find any elk anywhere else. I have looked over their website, as well as any other info I could find. I can't wait for my boy to hopefully get a shot!

Hunted late rifle Coues last year, last week of Dec, and a pretty good storm came through and dropped approx. 11-15" from Payson to Flagstaff. I was down by Globe and only got 4-6" of snow there. If you're already in hunting camp, that's a good thing--if you're traveling, it is a little bothersome. Whenever I have traveled from Kingman up the grade to Flagstaff that time of year, it has always been icy conditions at minimum. Should be a good hunt for you guys!

I have been luckily drawn for Unit 10 four times in last seven years. I've only experienced snow once on late bull hunt. All others were Sept archery bull and two October cow rifle hunts. It would just obviously depend on weather patterns this fall. It would be wise to be prepared for the possibility of temps reaching teens and single digits at night in December. I does get cold. I would definitely bring the SxS or quad with you for sure. Always good to have. Roads in my experience in Unit 10 are not all bad if weather holds mostly dry. If it rains or snows then they tend to get pretty greasy muddy. Good luck Calbuck on your hunt..

Thank you all for the great information on Arizona! I sent a message via email to the hunt manager on the "Big Bo" ranch for specific questions on hunting there..hopefully my research coupled with forum input and some hard nosed hunting will put us (my son more importantly) on some elk! Thanks again folks and keep it coming! BTW, I can offer some limited info on Ut, Nv, Ca and Idaho if anybody cares to trade experience..
