Headed out in the morning to Arizona where my brother has a rifle bull elk tag. Same area we have hunted on his last 4 elk tags successfully. Hope we can get it done again.

Have a fun trip.

I'm leaving tomorrow for Utah to help out on a spike elk hunt and then on to the Utah general rifle deer hunt for me. It's going to be a full rest of the month. Hunting, fishing, hunting some more. Elk, deer, grouse, and rabbits are on the menu the next little while.

Made it back from my brother's Arizona elk hunt. We made good on the tag rather quickly on the third day. Opening day was Friday and we only heard one weak bugle and saw very little fresh sign because it had rained only a few days before. The next couple of days were spent checking places where we have seen elk before. We checked lots of waterholes and found some with new tracks that looked promising.
The last waterhole we checked was one his buddy killed a big bull in 2 years ago when we were there. We found fresh sign and on our way back to the truck I found a pine tree that had just been thrashed, it was so fresh the sap was still oozing out. We decided this was the place to be.
My bro and I went to the bottom of the wash and my son stayed up high on the rim where he could see a long way up and down the wash. Just after we sat down to watch the water my son was signaling us to come up to where he was and be quick about it. When we got there he was laying on a rock watching the bull through his binos and said he had walked up on 2 bulls and some cows at about 20 yards.
We had to wait for quite a while for the bull to move to a clear spot in some very thick trees.
After a few shots the bull walked back into the trees and laid down and all we could see were antler tips. So the wait was on and in the meantime some cows came and were feeding near the bull and then wandered away and the bull didn't follow them so we figured he was hit. It was getting to be late afternoon and we didn't want to loose him in the dark so my bro and I were sneeking over to where he was and we were about 10 yards from him when he got up and ran away.
The trees were really thick and we couldn't tell if he went down the cliff face or across to the more open country.
Luckily he had gone out into the open and we spotted him at 355 yards and my bro was able to get 2 more shots into him.http://forum.eastmans.com/images/styles/eastmans/attach/jpg.gifhttp://forum.eastmans.com/images/styles/eastmans/attach/jpg.gifhttp://forum.eastmans.com/images/styles/eastmans/attach/jpg.gif
