I am considering picking up a leftover cow tag for area 34, but would like to confirm the elk population in the area. I would be joining 3 others in my group that have mule deer tags and are focusing on BLM areas north of Barnum/west of Kaycee to be specific. We hunted north of Burgess Junction last year for deer and saw several deer and elk, but wanted a change of scenery. Any assistance is greatly appreciated!

Very limited access to public land. Most elk are north of Dull Knife res. a few outfitters in there. I have hunted the forest area north of DullKnife I think it is a waste of time to buy tag for area unless you have private land you can hunt on.

MNhunter - tie a couple up for me!

Wyo - thanks for the info. We were aware that access could be difficult. Planning on making a scouting trip next weekend to see what we're up against . Area 33 be a better bet? My partners have 3 deer tags and I'd just like to fill the freezer.

From what I know if the area, if you want a cow you might be hunting some different areas than your buddies. If I were you, I think I would head up into the NF in the very NW of 34. I am not super familiar with that part of the forest, but I would guess they might be down in the valley moving towards the edge of the forest by October. Check out the link below for public land info on Area 34.

Backstrap, you will find your cow tied to a spruce at Lat 42.1826 Long 183.2309, JK, ;)

Seriously, I would go with what I mentioned earlier NW corner of 34 along the edge of the NF, maybe look over by Hazelton. I think it is pretty safe to say you won't have much luck getting on the BLM in the center of the zone.

Good Luck. Shoot me a PM if you have any specific questions.

mnhunter - thanks for the update. Hopefully you left her some food/water or else I'll already have my jerky made for me. Sounds like you found some good deer though! HuskyHunter will be out there for deer, but I think I'm going to just dedicate another week to bowhunting and roosters in ND. Hopefully you'll put something good on the ground!
