My son Drew a 2B deer tag for the first week of November. Was wondering what folks thoughts are about the unit? If you had the tag, how would you approach this hunt? PS, its not a youth permit. Any ideas sure would be appreciated.

Thoughts after being in 2b 2 of the last 3 years helping a buddy that drew the tag for that hunt is that it's way overrated and everyone that knows the unit has said the same thing in that it isn't what it used to be. They are issuing way too many tags and there are way too many road hunters that barely get out of their vehicles or off their quads. That may start getting turned around with all the roads now closed west that are gated at Rosa Road and lead to the lake where the better hunting is. There are many roads gated going off the main roads to the Jicarilla also and you can walk or take a mountain bike in behind them to get away form 90% of the tag holders. There are a lot of deer, but mostly does and dink bucks that aren't worth looking at. If you want a good hunt, either park at one of the gates at Rosa Road in the BLM and backpack in for the 5 day hunt as close to the lake as you can go or take a boat and access the country near the lake that way. You can do the same on the east side in the NF. Get up high and glass, glass, glass, and then glass some more and maybe you'll find a buck worth looking at. Just don't get your hopes up because they are taking very few decent bucks out of the unit the last several years no matter what hunt it is.

I believe there are better bucks in the unit then that have come down from the high country in CO, but from what I understand it's very difficult since it's an archery hunt. Everyone says even if you see a good buck it's almost impossible to get within shooting distance with a bow because of the crunchy snow. If it was a rifle hunt I would imagine you'd have a lot better chance at a good one due to the better visibility with some snow on the ground and being able to shoot quite a ways.
