Just got back from a weeklong family camping trip with the family. My son and I found a basin full of bucks anywhere from 18-25 inches wide. We found 3 absolute monsters 30 inches plus. We watched them all morning and noticed that as soon as the sun touched them they started wandering toward their bedding areas. By 9 a.m. they had all disapreared. They didn't come back out until very late in the evening.
We were camped nearby and everybody who was obviously also scouting never went past the end of the road during the hours the deer were out and were back 20-30 minutes later. They all told of not seeing animals which I also said we had not seen anything all week. My son also saw 2 very big bull elk in the same basin.
My son has an antelope tag and if he finds one to his liking bigger than his last one we will attempt to fill his archery deer tag there. There was one little guy hanging out near the campground and hopefully he will move away before the opener.DSCN0451.jpgDSCN0446.jpgDSCN0458.jpgDSCN0454.jpg

We had time after my son's antelope hunt to go up to 111 and chase the deer for a couple of days. In the 3 days we were there we saw zero hunters which is amazing since the nearby Success Loop is so popular. The majority of the bucks were above timberline and he was able to get to within 74 yards of a big 4x4 on the last day. He had numerous chances a small 2 and 3 point bucks but again he was holding out for a big one. The bucks were bedded in the open shale near the top of the first picture then moved into the quakies. We saw about 7 or 8 4x4 bucks with 25-28 inch spreads and the one he was after was much bigger.
We saw 2 small bull elk one afternoon and my son got within 100 yards of a giant bull the next day. The drainage has small creeks in the bottom and numerous springs on the mountainside so I believe that is why the bucks and bulls are there. There was also a flock of about 30 grouse up there too.
I think the reason we saw no hunters is because there are no roads and it is one heck of a pack out if you shoot something up there. It is incredibly steep and rocky.http://forum.eastmans.com/images/styles/eastmans/attach/jpg.gifhttp://forum.eastmans.com/images/styles/eastmans/attach/jpg.gifhttp://forum.eastmans.com/images/styles/eastmans/attach/jpg.gifhttp://forum.eastmans.com/images/styles/eastmans/attach/jpg.gif

Looks like you had a great trip! I was up in that same country a few years ago and it is beautiful country but as you mentioned, it's steep.
